On April 25, 2025, Emma Nguyen '25 presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Denver, Colorado. Emma's talk was titled, "The Impact of a Data Science Project on Student Interns' Development in Data Science," and her talk was developed with Dartmouth colleagues Merve Nur Kursav, Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics, Emma Vejcik, graduate student in the Department of Computer Science, and Scott Pauls, Professor of Mathematics. At the AERA conference, Emma spoke about her work on the effects of experiential learning on interns' professional development, academic interests, and self-efficacy. She found that external experiences can improve students' professional skills, change their academic pathways, and increase their overall confidence. Emma completed her research project with the help of the DIFUSE Program ("Data Science Inflused in Undergraduate STEM Education"), which aims to incorporate data science modules into introductory STEM and social science courses.
At Dartmouth, Emma is majoring in Quantitative Social Science (QSS), and she is currently working on her honors thesis under the supervision of Xun Shi, Professor of Geography. Emma's thesis is titled, "Health Costs of Grocery Store Closures: The effect of grocery store closures in rural New England on maternal and child health."
Emma is from Queens in New York City and has double minors in Geography and Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages. She is a member of the Dartmouth Asian American Studies Collective, Ujima Dance Troupe, and a student worker at Novack Cafe. After she graduates this June, Emma is planning on applying to Master's programs in Public Health and Data Science.
