Antonio Sirianni, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Program in Quantitative Social Science, received an award at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.
The award for Best Graduate Student Paper from the Rationality and Society Section recognizes Tony’s paper, "The Specialization of Informal Social Control: Fighting in the National Hockey League from 1960-2012." The paper demonstrates that the distributions of fighting across players, and the networks of violence between players who fight, have both changed significantly over time. This shift reflects the emergence of "enforcers," players who are typically known for their fighting abilities as opposed to their skills on the ice.
Tony has recently finished his doctorate in the Department of Sociology at Cornell University. His dissertation, titled "The Social Structure of Stigmatized Careers," looks at the social networks and career trajectories of individuals who perform socially deviant roles. While a fellow at QSS, Tony will be teaching QSS 41 Analysis of Social Networks.
